The Model of the United Nations is the opportunity for students to experience the frustrations and elations world leaders encounter every day. Each year, students from OIS and SIS work together to prepare for the Marist Brothers International School Model United Nations Conference. Students deepen their understanding of the complexities of global issues and their solutions. Leaving their own opinions at the door, the students are the voice of the nation they represent and engage in diplomatic negotiations with their allies and their enemies. As a result of their participation, world perspectives are changed and in some cases, futures are decided. Whether it is independent research, group discussion, problem-solving or taking centre stage that motivates you, rewards await anyone who signs up to become a delegate of a United Nations Member State.
6 SIS students with 29 OIS students attended the three day conference. The topics this year were Ethnic Minority Rights, E-waste, Food Shortage, Land Mines and Malaria. The SIS delegates completed country presentations, position papers and resolutions to prepare for the meeting that was attended by 113 students from 7 schools across Japan. Here are some comments from students who participated. I asked the students to write about 100 words but it seems they had more they wanted to say. I think that speaks volumes. It certainly makes me very happy. Congratulations to Kaya Doi, Ami Kang, Eri Moriguchi and Mai Iida on receiving an “Outstanding Delegate Award”.
