Our two schools have a rich tradition of successful participation in a wide variety of middle school and high school sports at the varsity, junior varsity and club levels. The Sabers teams benefit enormously from the Two Schools model, comprising of student-athletes from both OIS and SIS. Our association with international schools across Asia and domestic schools in Japan create many opportunities for both overseas and domestic competition.

HS Girls Soccer at the AISA Tournament

AISA Varsity Girls Soccer Tournament in Seoul.

On the 8th of April Mr Entwistle and Mr. Baig set off with 17 of SOIS’s finest sportswomen for the first AISA High School Girls Soccer Cup in Seoul.

The tournament consisted of SOIS, Yokohama International School, Sacred Heart International School (Tokyo), Seisen International School (Tokyo), Seoul International School and Korea International School.

The SOIS Sabers fought hard and were rewarded for their “never give up” attitude with a win and a draw on the first day, which put them into a semi final on the Saturday. After getting winning the semifinal through a tense penalty shoot out, SOIS found themselves in the final versus a daunting opponent – an undefeated Yokohama team!

It was a very tense and exciting final game, with SOIS scoring an equalizer in the final minute of play to force extra time. Unfortunately, there was not to be a fairy tale ending this time and Yokohama bundled the ball over to score the winner. Yokoahama IS were the worthy winners, but a lot of credit must be given to the SOIS team for their grit and determination.

Mr Baig and I were very proud to be with the team this year and look forward to seeing all the girls back next year. A special mention to the seniors and especially Lianne Terhune from OIS, who was representing the school in soccer for the 4th time!

HS Girls Soccer at the WJAA Tournament

Tatsuya Hashimoto
Supervisor for the Nagoya tournament

The HS Girls Soccer team had the WJAA Tournament at  Nagoya on the first weekend of the spring break. They won against Marist and lost against Yokohama on the first day, so they ended up playing CA to get into the final. Because of the two decent games on the fist day they looked tired, but the girls performed well against CA unfortunately, we lost in a penalty kick shoot out. Overall, we couldn't play our best performance during the tournament, which was a little bit of a disappointing result. I was impressed with their positive attitude and I wish them luck for the last touranament in Seoul.
